This years calendar was more a bit fun than anything else.
January started off with one year olds and December ended with 12 year olds. Each page was designed in a 'Celebrity Squares' style, with the children interacting with the viewer and their neighbour.
The style of the portraits was similar to the style that I used for the '365' project in that all the children are wearing black t-shirts on a white background.
The reasons for this were threefold.
Firstly, I wanted the viewer to be drawn to the sitters face rather than be distracted with what they might be wearing. (Or what might be in the background.)
Secondly, I liked the idea that by wearing the same colour t-shirt their individuality was being highlighted, whilst at the same time, (by wearing the same colour t-shirt) they were all being grouped together, as they often are, by virtue of having Down's syndrome.
Thirdly, the idea of them being placed in a box worked on a couple of levels in that; children with Down's syndrome are often 'pigeon-holed' in a box along with a person's preconceptions, these children though are interacting with the viewer and each other, showing that 'a box' should not and will not constrain them.
