It seems strange to state the obvious: that we all desire to love and be loved. That each relationship is unique to the two people who come together and create it. People with Down’s syndrome are no different. Often though, the opportunities to create these bonds and the lack of trust from the environment around them, prevents this happening and developing.
The couples that I have photographed are all very lucky to have families and communities that facilitate and actively encourage their relationships
to blossom. My work aims to promote discussion about the emotional life of people with Down’s syndrome and to challenge pre-conceived ideas. Stereotypes; which can be either positive or negative, are one dimensional and dismiss the complexity and depth that people experience both in themselves and in relationship to others.
I would to thank all the couples in these images who gave their time and let me feel a little bit of their love. Thank you also to Derwen College for my wonderful day there.
